Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Plant Science Labs?

Plant Science Labs is a privately owned, FDA registered, New York-based contract manufacturing organization specializing in the encapsulation of CBD ingredients. We have been a market leader in testing, formulating, manufacturing and encapsulation of hemp extracts since 2017.

How long has Plant Science been in business

Plant Science has over 5 years of dedicated CBD experience working with numerous forms of hemp extracts (isolate, distillate, full-spectrum, broad spectrum) and carrier oils to produce safe hemp products such as sprays and tinctures, while developing our new CBD Powder. During our years in operation, we have manufactured well over 1,000,000 pounds of Ingredient Powders for the nutritional industry.

How big is the facility

 Plant Science's State-of-the-Art Facility is:

  • 11,000 sq. ft. total
  • >1,000 sq. ft. of Laboratory space
  • 1,000 sq. ft. of warehousing space
  • ~8,000 sq. ft. of Production space

Is the manufacturing facility certified?

Our state of the art facility has been GMP compliant for almost a decade now, as well as being OU Kosher and Organic certified by NOFA-NY.

What materials does Plant Science require to manufacture product?

A majority of the products we manufacture consist of a hemp concentrate (extract or distillate) combined with a proprietary fiber blend. Customers have three general options for how they choose to source and provide these raw materials:

  1. A customer may send Plant Science pre-blended material (i.e. a formulation that has been mixed to its final specifications and is ready for encapsulation or bottling).
  2. A customer may send Plant Science individual raw materials, which we will formulate and mix to the customer’s specifications.
  3. A customer may choose to have their product manufactured using materials that Plant Science stocks in-house, which include full-spectrum extract from New York-grown hemp and our proprietary Fiber blend

What is the cost for manufacturing?

We currently offer capsules in one size only (size 00 oval; 0.5 g fill weight). While the theoretical yield per Kilogram is ~2,000 capsules, we factor in a production loss, giving an expected yield of ~1,500 capsules per Kilogram. The minimum order quantity for capsules is 2 Kilograms, which should yield a minimum of ~3,000 capsules depending on the quality of the raw materials.

Can Plant Science bottle and label?

Yes, we can bottle and label your capsules.  Our standard container offerings include a white HDPE 225cc and 300cc bottle with a white cap (with foam pressure seal), shrink wrap around the cap and bottleneck, and date/product identifier coding.  Plant Science does print labels, so the customer is responsible for providing the label of their choosing, or our standard labels. We do not recommend cotton stuffing in the bottles. Labels must meet all applicable rules and regulations. Please contact us for label printing specifications

What is the production lead time?

Our lead time is generally  6-8  weeks from the date we receive your raw materials with all required certificates of analysis. Failure to provide all required paperwork will increase turnaround time. If the COA is not with the raw materials the customer provides we will send out for testing from the third-party laboratories we contract with.

What is a COA?

Certificates of analysis (COAs) for each product they sell. A certificate of analysis (COA) is a laboratory report regarding the contents of a product. In the case of CBD, a COA will include cannabinoid content and other tested compounds, such as potency, residual, microbial, heavy metals, and pesticides. COAs ensure the customer knows exactly what is in the product they’re purchasing. Not only does this create transparency, but also ensures that the product contains exactly what it claims. A 2017 study found that almost 70% of CBD products sold online aren’t labeled correctly, having either considerably less or more CBD than advertised. CBD manufacturers should offer the most recent COAs of the products they provide. See the PDF link below.

We require COA’s for all oils and isolates coming from accounts and suppliers. Plant Science sends out for a COA for all ingredients. This testing cost is reflected on your estimate and final invoice.

What are White-Label (Unlabeled) Products?

White label products come’s packaged in a white HDPE bottle (either 225cc or 300cc), with a basic label. We call this ‘white label’  The customer will bear the final responsibility for making the graphical modifications to their label, before the customer begin printing their labels, and re-applying to the bottles.
